How Local SEO Actually Works, Without the Jargon

Local SEO isn't magic and it isn't a scam. Here's the plain-English version of how you climb the Google map results in your town.

When someone searches “electrician near me,” Google has to decide which three businesses to show in that little map box at the top. Local SEO is the work of becoming one of those three. That’s really all it is.

The good news for a local business: you’re not competing with the whole internet, just the other shops in your area. The other good news: Google is fairly open about what it’s looking at.

The three things Google weighs

Google leans on three ideas when it ranks local businesses, and once you know them, the whole thing stops feeling mysterious.

Relevance is whether you actually do the thing someone searched for. A plumber shows up for plumbing searches, not roofing. This is where your website’s service pages and your Google Business Profile categories do the heavy lifting.

Distance is how close you are to the person searching. You can’t move your shop, but you can make sure Google knows exactly where you are and which towns you serve.

Prominence is how well-known and trusted you look. Reviews are a big part of this. So is having a real website, consistent contact info across the web, and a Google profile that’s filled out and active.

Your Google Business Profile is the engine

Most owners think local SEO is all about the website. The website matters, but your Google Business Profile is what actually shows up in the map results. A profile with the right categories, real photos, current hours, and a steady flow of reviews will beat a fancy website with an empty, neglected profile almost every time.

Keeping that profile active is ongoing work, not a one-time setup. New reviews, fresh photos, and the occasional post all tell Google the business is alive and worth showing.

Reviews do more than look nice

A wall of recent five-star reviews helps you rank, and it also closes the sale. When two plumbers show up and one has 12 reviews and the other has 140, most people don’t think twice. The trick is asking every happy customer, every time, which is exactly the kind of thing that’s easy to forget and easy to automate.

That’s the short version. If you’d rather not learn the ins and outs, that’s what we’re here for. We handle the profile, the reviews, and the ranking so you can handle the jobs.
